I've discovered the best thing about living on the west coast- football season. Football starts on Sundays at 10am- it's now just after 5, and the night game is starting. I'll still have time to watch Family Guy after this. Sweet.

It's been an interesting five months- I'm discovering that I don't get paid nearly enough money for some of the people I have to put up with, or the amount of time I spend actually working. I suspect it's the same for everyone else in the world. My question is- all the people that make my job more difficult than it needs to be- do they complain about people? I try not to create more work for anyone, and I'm never rude about it...does anyone ever stop to think if maybe they were a little nicer to everyone, the world would be a better place?

The sisters are coming out for Thanksgiving- it will be our first "non-traditional" Thanksgiving. No way am I attempting to cook any sort of turkey- we're having it prepared, and then I'm picking it up. MomY and DadY are staying at home with the snow (as far as I know) and so we'll have a lovely time. We're going wine tasting, and I'm sure Big Sis has a whole binder of things to do. I'm looking forward to seeing them- it's been nearly three weeks since I was in Minnesota for the wedding.

Football is on, and I've got some vested interest in the game. I'm going to attempt to write more than I have been- I think it's good for me.

Hooray for long weekends!

Hooray for long weekends spent flying from state to state to state. I left California this afternoon, spent a good 45 minutes in Arizona, and am now chilling (and by chilling I mean roasting) in Nevada. It's 110 outside, and not a lot cooler inside. I've got two hours before my plane leaves to take me back to the land of the lakes, and I'm too impatient to amuse myself like I normally would.

I slammed my finger in a door today. Not my finest hour. It's the middle finger on my right hand, so if I were to be so rude as to flick someone off, they would get an extra large finger today. I've even got a puncture wound. It almost interfered with my typing. Almost.

I've got quite the weekend planned. MS is coming to pick me up at 4am, then we're having lunch with BigSis, Bethmania, El Dueno and a host of other pool peeps at 11- then it's rest time before dinner with Rednic, Natpot, and everyone else. On Saturday I'm off to Madtown to see KenBecky and LouisPhil (HOORAY!!!) and then back for MS's big bad 22 birthday. Sunday the family fun commences, and ends on Monday, when DadY is dropping me off at Rednic's for dinner with the maids.

Only an hour and 58 minutes now. Time is just flying by.

It has been a long time since my last blog. Since then, I've had three visitors, and a couple of really long work weeks. I also got me some glasses. JenY can see again.

It's a four day work week for me- I'm flying home for MS's birthday this weekend, and am attempting to see a lot of people in three days. Especially since MomY's family is having a shindig. I'm told there will be t-shirts to identify the various generations. Hmm...interesting. Oh well. So SuperSarah was here to visit for my birthday, and she locked me in jail! Don't I look sad? So sad that you feel like you should send me a present? That's what I thought.

I'm really liking my job, and am meeting some "nice young people." I think DadY is afraid I'm becoming a hermit. But at least I'm a hermit with a really good tan.

Ok- since today is my first day with the glasses, I've got a bit of a headache. It is nice to be able to see more than six feet in front of my face, but I'm not quite used to them yet.

A very quick little update

I really need to be better about blogging...because my life is oh-so-interesting. Oh wait, no. That's someone else's life.

MS and Randy Rana were here last week. I enjoyed having visitors, and we went into San Fran on Sunday and saw some sights. MS and I monkeyed around at the Golden Gate Bridge and wandered around on the wharf. We also did some shopping! Hooray- I haven't been shopping since I moved out here. I'm sporting a pretty new button down from H & M today. It's green. Makes me feel happy.

Only five more days until JENY DAY! That's right- the birthday countdown has begun. Big Sis is arriving very late tomorrow night to spend a week with me. Actually, I think she's coming to see Northern California (or Norcal...as we call it out here) and I'm a convenient place to stay. Oh well- we're going to see lots of baseball and do fun things.

Well, I've got to get me some dinner. Until next time.

Wow- it's been a real long time since my last entry. Very bad blogging!

I'm killing time until I get to go pick up MS and Randy Rana from the airport. My first visitors! I'm so excited- but not overly excited about the two hour drive each way, in the middle of the night.

While I was making a pie on Sunday, I sliced the end of my right index finger. It's really making my typing suffer. But I'm from the hood, so I'm going to tough it out. It's just hard to bandage.
- in hon
So weird story that I've been saving- I went to get my oil changed. While I'm paying, the manager asks if I like my name. I've long held the opinion that when I was born, my parents didn't have a name picked out, asked the people in the next birthing room what they named their baby girl, and then stuck me with it. I've never been particularly fond of my name, but I don't hate it. Back to the story- the manager said he almost named his daughter Jenny, in honor of the John Denver song. But he named her Courtney instead, and now she doesn't like her name. Then, he wanted to know if my parents were big John Denver fans. I really just wanted to sign the charge slip and go home. It took entirely too long.

I also had to go to the eye doctor- JenY's going to have a new look in a week. Apparently I'm not supposed to be driving without some sort of corrective eyewear. Oops. Bad JenY. I've got some really cool transition lenses on my new glasses. I'll have to post a picture.

Ok- time to go. I promise to be back soon.

JenY's adventures in California

Furniture! I have furniture! It’s more stuff to dust, but there’s just something about having shelves for books, and a coffee table to put my feet on that makes me feel like I actually live here. I’ve still got a wall of boxes to unpack, but I’ve got a three day weekend to do it.

I went to the DMV last week to change my license, so I’m now an official resident of California. I had to get printed. If I ever decide to commit a crime, my prints are on file. Weird…there goes my plan of robbing the In-N-Out Burger…kidding.

While I was at the DMV, I also had to take a written test. The first time I took my drivers test, 8 years ago, it was on a computer. I’ve suddenly gone back in time, because the clerk handed me a sheet of paper and one of those little pencils with no eraser, and I got a little section of counter to take my test. I only missed one question. Sweet! Then I had to pass the eye exam. My vision has apparently deteriorated quite a bit since my last vision test (also 8 years ago) since it’s now 20-40 in one eye and 20-70 in the other. Stay tuned for my next installment, JenY goes to the eye doctor. I’m sure it will be an experience, especially since I’ve never been to an eye doctor. I’m having visions of that episode of Friends where Monica has to hold Rachel’s head at the optometrist. Yikes!

American Idol is finally on, and they’re singing songs from the 21st Century tonight. So far, they’ve all picked really bad songs. Suds in the Bucket? Really? Paula is especially crazy- 40 million people in the Church of Mandisa? I’m pretty excited about this American Dreamz movie with Hugh Grant and Mandy Moore. It’s an American Idol spoof! I always love a good spoof- I don’t know that American Dreamz is going to be another Spinal Tap or Best in Show, but it should be worth a laugh.

I’m going to sign off now- it’s time for Chris Daughtry. See you next time.

So I think I've walked about 100 miles since my arrival in California. Not that I'm complaining- it's 70 degrees and sunny, so I can work on my tan while I'm walking. Multitasking at its finest.

I'm watching college basketball. I love this time of year- I'm always excited to watch the games, and I always secretly hope for the big upset. The Cinderella teams are always so excited. This year's team is Bradley- in honor of Natpot's roommate Webcam Katie. Go Braves!

I clipped coupons today for the first time in my life. You know those ads that come in the mail, and everyone but Miss School Teacher throws them away? I actually looked at mine today. There are some good deals in there. Sweet.

I watched American Idol last night, and I was sad to see Kevin go. He was cute, and preferable to Bucky...who is more in need of a makeover than anyone who has ever been on the show. I still think Paris and Mandise are my favorites for the year. The ladies have mad pipe action.

Well, I think that's it for today. I've been so busy running around that I just fall into bed and am asleep within minutes. I kind of like it that way.

I like to think of myself as a modern pioneer

Happy Monday morning! It's just past seven here, and the sun is out! I'd almost forgotten what spring is like, and in March!

Out of sheer boredom yesterday, I fiddled with my television for an hour, and I'm now able to watch three whole channels. Luckily, one of them is ABC, so I didn't miss Grey's Anatomy last night. I also had to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and ten minutes into the show, I was bawling.

But my cable guy is coming tomorrow morning between 6 and 8am, so I should be in business and able to have contact with the outside television world. Now if only I had something to set my television on. My apartment is pretty ghetto fab right now. I broke down and bought an air mattress on Saturday, so I'm sitting on that while the tv sits on the floor in the corner. Not even a packing crate to be seen anywhere.

My furniture should be here by next Monday. I've never been so excited to have more things to dust, but I am looking forward to having something other than the floor to sit on.

I've got to get to work, and I have my first full staff meeting today. Should be interesting, and we're getting fed, so I'm excited.

Animated Creator...and just when I thought I'd found my calling in life

Is this what people do in the real world? So when I got home from work, I took the her personality test. I am an animated creator. LOL...I sound like a cartoonist. Watch for me to create the next historically inaccurate Disney film. Coming soon to a theater near you...the story of Sally Hemmings, the slave who fell in love with Thomas Jefferson and lived happily ever after...or not. Don't hold your breath. I hope all of JenY's faithful readers are wearing green today. I'm not yet sure how big St. Patty's Day is out here in California. Probably not as big as in St. Paul, but green beer is still green beer.

I spent a half hour on the phone with a boy last night. Well, it was Justin and he's my Sprint Customer care rep. I had to change my phone number (so be sure you get those digits!) and he was very helpful. I don't think he was overly pleased with me, because I was calling on the phone I wanted serviced, but I don't have another phone. Anyway, he gave me very detailed instructions on how to do it myself, and then transferred me to an automated system so I could renew my agreement. Unfortunately, he pressed the wrong button (perhaps intentionally...) and I had to renew my agreement in Spanish. JenY's Spanish is rusty, but apparently not as rusty as I thought, because I understood everything and successfully renewed my agreement. And the phone works, so that's really what's important.

So now it's off to free breakfast, and then another day at the office. Well, another day of running around trying to get everything taken care of so I can be at the office next week. I'm definitely getting my exercise this week. Happy St. Patty's Day!

Beware the Ides of March

Hello from sunny California! I'd almost forgotten what blue sky looks like. I've finally got a moment to breathe after a very packed couple of days. I've got an apartment, half of my clothes, a television and a sleeping bag to last me until next week, when the movers arrive with my furniture and stuff.

MomY and I had a very long road trip, but we managed not to annoy each other too much. She bought a box of Hot Tamales in the middle of Nebraska, and they lasted until Sacramento. We also ate at a lot of McDonald's. I have yet to find the McDonald's here, and I'm in no rush.

We hit a snowstorm in Cheyenne, and then quite a bit of traffic at Lake Tahoe. I guess we missed two feet of snow, but it still took us two hours to go thirty miles. Up and around and up more- we hit the summit at 7200 feet, and Sacramento is 9 (yes, 9) feet above sea level. So we had to go all the way up, and then all the way back down. I'm not making that drive again any time soon. Anyone who comes to visit and wants to go to Reno is on their own.

Tomorrow is my first day of work in the real world. My boss asked if 8 was too early for me to start. I said I thought I'd probably be early, as I'm definitely still on Central time. But I picked up my keys today, and have lots of fun meetings tomorrow, so I'm excited.

MomY flew home this afternoon, so I'm on my own. It's an interesting feeling- I'm nervous, but I'm feeling strangely independent today. Maybe because I managed to get to the airport and back without getting lost. Take that California freeway system. I still have to go to the DMV to become an official Californian, but I have faith that I will be successful in that endeavor as well.

Well, I've still got to set up my cable and internet, and then find something to eat for dinner that can be prepared using one pot and a pizza sheet, because that's all I have right now. DadY claims I'll have furniture by this time next week. If not, there's a brand new IKEA open about fifteen miles down the road.

One last, final last, Minnesota Blog

Well, it's 1:42 am, according to my clock, and I'm about ready to hit the sack for a good hour of sleep. I just wanted to get in one last Minnesota blog, as the next one will be from either the middle of nowhere, or more probably California.

Today was one very hectic, busy, and rather sad day for JenY. I did some packing this morning, and then went to lunch with the sistahs at Big Ten. I had to get one last gooey cheese bread in me before heading to the land of the health food...

After lunch, I made MS come and help me move around some furniture. She has adopted my plants, so I'm glad they found a good home. Then it was off to coffee/dessert with not-so-Vile Ryan, which I thoroughly enjoyed. His hair is definitely longer than mine. Oh well. For the first time, I found myself able to enjoy his company as a friend, and it wasn't hard. It was fun. I've recovered from my broken heart. Life is too short to do otherwise.

Then I rushed home for one final goodbye party. The "clean out the liquor cabinet" party did not really work so well. I did my best, and downed quite a bit of rum, but alas, the Captain got the better of me. We'll meet again, Captain Morgan, and someday, I'll be the victor. I got to say my goodbyes to Natpot and Katie, and Rednic and Miss School Teacher. Goodbyes have never been easy for JenY- so I consider a plus that I'm not an emotional wreck right now. It's hard to say goodbye to someone you've known your entire life, and to say goodbye to friends who know you better than you know yourself. My girls have always been close to me...and it's easier moving away knowing that the relationships I have are stronger than the miles between us.

So now it's late at night, I'm feeling nostalgic and a little maudlin, and I still have to count boxes and furniture. The movers are coming next week sometime- and DadY is supervising, so I'm in good hands. My car is full. I just hope there is room for MomY tomorrow. It's going to be a tight fit.

It's a big step for me. I've never spent more than a month outside of Minnesota, and I'm a little nervous. My nerves are balanced by my excitement, and at the moment, my goosebumps. I really should put on a sweatshirt. As I am generally not one for making big, life changing choices, this is major. I'm scared, I'm excited, and perhaps still a little buzzed, but I've managed to avoid a breakdown. So I'm the victor in this battle- whether or not I'll win the war remains to be seen. But I'm the eternal optimist, and I've got enough confidence to always bet on myself. Things are looking good for the long run, and JenY is about to get bigger and better.

I'll leave with a few of my favorite memories from my 23+ years in Minnesota

-My tenth grade locker block, which I credit with cementing my friendship with Rednic.
-Sitting on the basketball bench with Miss School Teacher
-TPC

- My sad and pathetic chase after Aaron Peirsol
-The day our high school swimming pool was a lovely shade of green, and had foam on it
- Roadtripping to Michigan with Bethmania and Super Sarah into enemy territory..watching my beloved Golden Gophers lose. I still maintain that Ann Arbor is a whore.
- Learning to knit
- Hanging out in the darkroom with KenBecky during our yearbook "class"
-Baby Smellen, perhaps the cutest thing ever!
-Valley Fair scavenger hunt with Natpot

And finally, Sunday nights with my maids and DH and Grey's Anatomy. Super fun...especially when followed by Monday nights spent discussing DH and GA at knitting.

This is JenY, signing off from Minneapolis. Ich liebe Dich, and Auf Wiedersehen.

Sanity calms, but madness is more interesting.

I can't believe how much has happened since my last blog. Let's see...

On Tuesday, our broomball team lost. It wasn't particularly pretty. So another year goes by that I have to beg for an intramural t-shirt. I think everyone was really hoping we could win one this year.

On Wednesday, I met up with Brandacious and Evil Hot Helen, and Baby Smellen. Baby Smellen was celebrating her 5 month birthday. She's huge. At least forty pounds. Or maybe that was just my imagination. Baby Smellen is perhaps the cutest baby ever. So I said my goodbyes to the knitters. I'm very mad that Chele could not come. I'm considering stalking into her office tomorrow, because I'm not leaving without saying goodbye. Plus, that would really be an entertaining time.

I went home to see Mom and DadY, and saw King Louie this morning. I hadn't been to his new nursing home yet, and he took me all around and showed me the birdcage and all his postcards and pictures. He looked better than he's looked in a long time, so that was good. I said my goodbyes to him, and promised to send him a postcard.

I've just returned from dinner with my friend Becky. We went to eat here, and it was delicious. I had clucks and fries. It makes me laugh just to say "clucks and fries." I haven't seen Becky for quite awhile, so I'm glad we met up.

So now I'm watching March Madness, and trying to finish organizing everything. I'm never moving again. Ever. You will all have to come visit me in 20 years when I'm still living in the same apartment. Hopefully there will be room for you. I seem to accumulate stuff at a rapid rate.

I've got a big day lined up tomorrow. I'm headed to one last luncheon at Big Ten with the sistahs (the "h" is for hot!) and then have to pack my car. Then I've got one more goodbye gathering (that's 3 parties, 2 dinners, one lunch a breakfast, and a possible office stalking, if you're keeping track) I'm dropping MS off at the airport at 4am on Saturday, then am picking up MomY, and we're hitting the road. I'm tired just thinking about it.

Yesterday was a sad day for Minnesota. RIP Kirby Puckett. Kirby was one of my heroes growing up- I remember being allowed to stay up late to watch the 1987 World Series, and watching the 1991 World Series. I even still have all his baseball cards. So Kirby, wherever you are- touch em all, and thanks for bringing excitement and joy to this little girl's life.

I had my official going away party at the pool last night. I did not cry, which I'm pretty excited about. Bethmania and Super Sarah really know how to throw a party. Mmm, Buca. There was even a cake. Bethmania tells me I'm lucky it said "Good Luck", as the woman who wrote on the cake misunderstood what Bethmania wanted, and the cake almost said, "Get Lucky" Either way, I appreciate the sentiment. It was good to see everyone, and now I'm starting to get the feeling that I won't be seeing all of these people on a regular basis. It's a scary thought. Eek...why am I moving all the way across the country? One of my former co-workers, Pirate Greg, did tell me to make sure I didn't walk into the ocean. Best thing anyone said to me all night. I laughed, and then laughed some more.

Tonight I'm cooking dinner- chicken parmesan. It's idiot proof, which is good, because I think I qualify as an idiot in the kitchen. I've gotten the recipe from Miss School Teacher, so it's written in clear, simple instructions, that a fifth grader could follow.

I'm off to run some errands now, and to get more boxes.

I was the big winner of the Oscar pool last night. I correctly picked 6 of the 8 categories. Best Original Song, and Movie of the Year got me. Oh well...I enjoyed the Three 6 Mafia. I had no idea it was so hard to be a pimp. And they were excited...injected some life into the otherwise pretty boring ceremony.

My favorite two parts of the show- Ben Stiller's green unitard, and Will Ferrell and Steve Carell's makeup presentation. I always like to see people sacrifice dignity to get a laugh.

I also decided last night I would like to be adopted by the Clooney family. All of them are successful. George, Nick, Rosemary, Jose Ferrer, Miguel Ferrer, Debby Boone. Who wouldn't want to be in George Clooney's family?

It's time to go and build a fort of boxes, and to do more packing. Then it's off to the pool for a shindig.

JenY's new spring line

I thought it was time to change things up in the template department. I'm going to test drive this little green number for awhile and see if I like it.

In case you needed proof that I am blonde, here's a good one for you. When I came home Friday night, I left my phone in my car. Since I did not so much go anywhere yesterday, I didn't notice that I didn't have my phone until I went to the grocery store at noon today. I often wonder what life was like for the 20something before cell phones. I guess now I know. I missed three calls, and I apologize to anyone who was trying to get a hold of me. Whoops. Phone is now safely back in my possession.

Tomorrow starts the first of the going away parties. I've decided that going away parties are like funerals. They're more for those who are staying (or still alive) than for the departed. But I am looking forward to them. I'm moving real far away, and I would guess that I will never see some of these people again. I'm sure there will be a lot of tears- I'm a little bit of a watering pot, and if someone else starts to cry, then it's all over. Chele, you're on notice... if you start to cry, I'm going to punch you.

Well, today was another exciting day of sorting and packing. I did most of the stuff in my room yesterday, and today I tackled my desk and file cabinet. Good fun all around...I'm pitching stuff left and right. It goes completely against everything I've ever known, and I find myself almost unable to throw out a Valentine's card from MS that's three years old. At last count, I had two hundred blue pens. I really like blue pens. My name's JenY, and I'm a packrat. I am finding all sorts of stuff I'd given up on, so I guess it all balances out.

I'm going to continue packing tonight while I'm watching the Oscars. I'm a little sad that Grey's Anatomy isn't on tonight, but I guess the Oscars will be ok. I've actually seen some of the nominated movies this year, so that's a bonus for me. Bethmania, Super Sarah and I have a pool running on the winners. As I am an excellent picker, I predict victory for JenY. Stayed tuned for results.

Happy Birthday Miss School Teacher!

Today is Miss School Teacher's Birthday. Happy Birthday! I'm a little jealous that she's 24. I'm anxious to turn 24, I don't like being 23. I like even numbers better. Don't ask...it's an OCD thing.

Other famous people born today include Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Herschel Walker, Jessica Biel, and Alexander Graham-Bell. So Miss School Teacher, you have a track legend, a football star, an actress, and a dead inventor blowing out candles today. You're in good company.

I'm curious as to whether Miss School Teacher brought treats to share with her class. Hopefully cupcakes. Yum! I hope there is birthday cake for tonight. Delicious. And after reading those last couple of sentences, I think maybe it's time to eat some lunch.

On my jaunt to buy her birthday present, I ventured into Marshall Fields, where I could not find a salesperson to save my life. Every time I found one, there was a woman in front of me asking an obscure question that required the salesperson to go into the bowels of the store, never to be seen again. I just wanted to ask a question that required a yes or no answer. I must have spent half an hour in the basement looking for someone to answer my question.

While I was shopping, Rednic called. While we were having our daily noontime chat, she got another phone call from our favorite bartender Mark. He wanted to know if we were coming in to see him soon. As Mark is a very nice looking young man, I think we'll go see him before too long. And no, I don't think it's strange that Mark has Rednic's phone number.

So we're headed to Miss School Teacher's for dinner, then we're going out. It should be an interesting night. Miss School Teacher's friend Mr. Motorcycle is going to come, and he's always a fun time.

This afternoon, I think I'm going to build a fort with my boxes. I've packed 11 so far, and have many more to go.

Happy ten days of JenY! I have joined the ranks of the employed. (JenY does jig on coffee table) I just found out this morning that I get to pack up and leave everything I've ever known. Bring on the moving truck! I'm ready for the challenge!

I'm sad to leave behind my friends, but I'm ready for a new stage in life. I've decided there's no better place than California. Sun, sun, and more sun...and none of this snow nonsense. So that's my really big news. I've decided that this job was totally worth the unemployment, and all the arguments and stress. Ask me again in three months if I have the same opinion.

As a counterpoint to the excitement of the new job, I'm fighting a losing battle against some sort of sickness. I tried to blame it on MS, but I don't think it's her fault. I think it's a combination of flying, and then a very long, but very entertaining night out on the town.

Rednic and I started our Friday night at the Melting Pot. Delicious, but a little spendy for me. We caught up on our girl talk for the week. Then we wandered down to the Local, which is where we always seem to wander when we're downtown. There we encountered Neil. He was an interesting sort. A mortgager, so he and Rednic talked financial for a bit. We also met Neil's friends, two of whom were married, but apparently ignorant of their wives.

After leaving the Local, Rednic and I ventured into our favorite downtown establishment. Our bartender Mark wasn't working, but we managed to get his phone number and call him up. Then we met Oliver and Paul, two Australian guys. Or, as I referred to them, Commonwealthians. They were a lot of fun, and we somehow ended up staying at the bar much later than we'd intended, but it was super fun. The next time I'm in Melbourne, I'll know someone.

I spent Saturday and Sunday laying around, which is how I started today. But now I have twenty million things to do in two weeks. It's going to be interesting. Peace out.

JenY has left the building

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day

I’d be safe and warm
If I was in l.a.
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees
And I pretend to prayI pretend to pray

You know the preacher likes the cold
He knows I’m gonna stay
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day

If I didn’t tell her
I could leave today
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day
California dreaming’
On such a winter’s day

I get to leave tomorrow! Hooray for free trips to warm destinations! I've just gotten off the phone with my contact in California, and it sounds like I have a busy couple of days ahead of me, but I'm very excited.

In preparation for the jaunt, I had to run some errands and go to the bank. I was over by Har-Mar, so I just went to the bank there, instead of going to my usual branch. As soon as I walked in the door, I remembered why I don't like the Har-Mar branch. There were twelve people in line for the tellers (I counted!), three employees on the telephone, fourteen other employees (most of them discussing their lunch plans, even though it was 10:30am) and two tellers. It took a good 30 minutes for me to get out of the bank. It's a good thing I wasn't in a hurry. I'd feel bad for anyone who had someplace to be.

Well, I still have to pack and decide what I'm going to wear. I'd better get busy. Hee hee. Get busy. Then I have to go to broomball, but I'm not playing tonight. I don't want to risk injury.

I had the best weekend ever. Mom and DadY took me to watch hockey (always a favorite Yfamily activity), and RedNic came down on Saturday. She ended up staying over, and it was so fun. I can't remember the last time I had a "sleepover" at my parents house. Miss School Teacher came down too, and we went out on the town on Saturday night. Good fun was had by all.

On my way home yesterday, I was driving along, exceeding the speed limit just a little. I was in the left lane because I was driving faster than the traffic in the right lane, and there was a car in front of me (from Wisconsin) that wouldn't move over so I could go around. I was getting slightly annoyed that they wouldn't move over, until we happened upon a State Trooper. I was smart, slowed down, and got back in the right lane. (Seems like common sense, right?) The State Trooper pulled over the Wisconsinite. Ahh. It's small and petty of me to take pleasure in someone else's misfortune, but well, sometimes I'm small and petty.

I'm deciding on outfits for my trip to California. I think tomorrow I'm going to take a fashion poll, and let people vote on what they think I should wear. Then I'm going to pack. I've decided I'm not playing broomball tomorrow night. I don't want to risk injury, and as I'm still bruised from last week, I'm going to play it safe.

I'm updating my ipod so I have lots of good music for the plane trip. At least on this trip, I don't have to take the redeye home, and I get to fly through Phoenix. A different airport. Joy.

Well, that's all for today. Stay tuned for tomorrow's exciting installment.

I think even hell has frozen over today...Brr!

Oy! It is cold today! It's so cold, I've gotten out my long underwear. You know it's cold when JenY sacrifices fashion for comfort.

I'm headed home to see Mom and DadY. Secretly, I think they wanted a dogsitter, and use of the car. If they take my car, I'm stuck there watching the dog. Ingenious.

Natpot's roommate Katie the Kook (that's kook, rhymes with cook, not kook, rhymes with duke) made the most delicious chicken piccata. Yummy! We also uncovered a vast conspiracy. We think boys perhaps bug the stuffed animals they buy girls for Valentine's Day, and then listen while the girls talk about it. Natpot's appeared harmless, but you can't be too careful.

Well, I've got errands to run, and a hot lunch date. Stay warm!

Skating bears, pretty flowers, and hot cowboys...sounds like a party at RedNic's

Well, I've got a lovely bruised right hand today, thanks to a monster fall at broomball last night. At least we won the game.

Super Sarah and I saw Brokeback Mountain last night. It was excellent. I managed to not cry, but Super Sarah teared up twice. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

After the movie, we watched the Prettiest Little Flower in the pond. He's quite possibly the most fun figure skater ever. Anyone who is attempting to buck the "US Figure Skating Establishment" should get a prize. And, he had a really fun swan costume on last night.

So I was watching the US Men's hockey team play Latvia this afternoon. I've decided this is my favorite part of being unemployed. I can watch Olympic hockey games live. The World Cup of hockey is being held in Latvia next year, and my commentator friends at USA tell me that the opening ceremonies will include skating bears. I like a good bear as much as the next person, but won't somebody please think of the bears?. Skating bears...what will they think of next?

I'm headed over to Natpot's for dinner tonight. Katie (the new roommate, who unfortunately doesn't yet have a blog handle) is cooking. I'm pretty excited. Details tomorrow. Not because it's Valentine's Day...but because I get to go to California, again! Next week! Hooray for getting out of Minnesota in February! It's 75 and sunny in California, and it is neither 75, nor sunny outside my window. It's warm and cheery inside, mainly because I'm on Cloud Nine, and am bouncing off the walls. It's a good thing no one is here, or they might feel the need to slap me.

I am excited that I have a date this afternoon. Super Sarah is going to see Brokeback Mountain with me. I've wanted to see it, but no one except Super Sarah wanted to go. We're going to the Heights theater, just down the street. I haven't been to the Heights Theater in years. So I'm excited about that. What better way for a single girl to spend Valentine's Day than seeing a movie about gay cowboys?

After the movie portion of the afternoon, I believe I'm cooking dinner. Exactly what I'm going to make remains to be seen. Then we've got broomball, and I'm thinking about wearing my special heart pants that MS got for me last year. It is Valentine's Day. In fact, I'm going to go put them on now. Ooh, silky.

DadY called a while ago. He's also very excited about the trip to California. MomY tells me there was some victory dancing last night. But the reason he called, he wanted to know if I would be home doing laundry over the weekend so he could use my car. LOL. He and MomY are off to Sioux Falls ( I didn't ask why) and he wanted to take a car. So I'd get to tool around in the big F150, crushing everything on the road smaller than a tank. Awesome. I also think that's the first time in the history of the world that a father has asked to borrow his kid's car.

And so I wish all of you a very happy day! It's a good day to be JenY, and a terrific day to be alive!

It was a very early Sunday morning. I was awakened at 6:21 am- according to my clock, when bethmania's phone rang. I assume it woke her up as well...since I could hear it across the apartment. So then I was awake, and the neighbors started watching the Olympics at 7, so then I just got up and went to the grocery store. It was quiet, so I think I'm going to do all my shopping at 8am on Sunday mornings. Or not.

I mastered the Sunday crossword puzzles, and am trying to kill some time before the usual Sunday night gathering at Miss School Teacher's. I think Mom and Dad School Teacher will be putting in an appearance, so it will be a good time. I'm really anxious to see what happens on Grey's Anatomy tonight. I'm pretty sure Meredith isn't going to blow up, but I'm curious as to how she's going to get her hand out of the body. I'm also uber excited for the return of Agent Hottie of the bomb squad.

So that's my story for the day. I'm watching cross country skiing, which is really not all that exciting, but the commentators are getting really excited about it, so I continue to watch. It's the vicious, neverending cycle that is the Olympics.

Let the Olympics begin!

Miss School Teacher and the Naughty Nurse hosted dinner last night. Parmesan chicken. Yummy. Then Miss School Teacher took me to see her classroom, as I had not previously seen it. Very cool, and took me back to the days I was in fifth grade. I did not like my fifth grade teacher, and our classroom was not nearly as well decorated as Miss School Teacher's.

After dinner, we watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Unlike some of the Olympic haters (Chele!), I love watching the Olympics. I'm especially excited about hockey! And about skiing- skiers=hot. Jeremy Bloom is my winter sport boyfriend. And, even though it's dorky and very Minnesotan, I'm going to watch curling. I can't tear myself away from it. Normally, I would never watch curling, skiing, speed skating, or bobsledding...but it's the Olympics, and I'm addicted. You can add the Olympics to Mountain Dew, CSI, Grey's Anatomy, flannel sheets, college basketball, knitting, and Tony Reali- things I'm currently addicted to.

One of my favorite parts of the Olympics is that I get to hear so many other national anthems. "O Canada" is a personal favorite, as well as "God Save the Queen"

Today is pretty low key. I've been looking at grad schools and watching basketball. My Golden Gophers look like they're going to pull one out today against Michigan State. Today is also the day all the coaches are wearing sneakers with their suits in support for Coaches against Cancer. I think that's uber awesome. Who cares if it looks stupid? It's a good cause.

Ok- I'm off to the grocery store, and then I'll see where the day takes me. I love Saturdays.

Happy Birthday to the Naughty Nurse! I do love a good birthday, and I'm excited for birthday dinner and cake!

I made a decision yesterday. A fairly monumental one, as decisions in my life go. I'm going to go back to school. My goal for today is to look at some schools and decide what I'm looking for and where I might want to go. I'm pretty sure I want to get out of Minnesota. I need a change of scene. MomY suggested somewhere warm, but I think that was for her benefit as much as mine. I'm thinking big city.

On the advice of PAWS (I don't like that name either...I think she's going to be Super Sarah), I've started to read Sammy's Hill. Super Sarah claims it's a book about me, and after reading the first few pages, I'm inclined to agree. Kristen Gore must have some sort of spy cam in my brain. LOL. I highly recommend the book. It's quite possibly the funniest thing ever.

So that's my agenda for the day. Bethmania has gone to visit the Maniacs in Milwaukee, so it's pretty quiet here. Just me, my laptop, and my spiral macaroni for the afternoon. Life is good.

Grammy Fever...

I had a delicious dinner last night, courtesy of Bethmania's Casa de Enchiladas. Yummy. She also "baked" some delicious cookies, of which I have eaten two already this morning. Peanut butter cup. I see that there is still one more, so I'm going to go eat it.

Ok, also watched the Grammys last night. PAWS, Bethmania and I had a little pool riding on some of the winners. The loser (Bethmania) has to wash PAWS dishes the next time she hosts dinner. As PAWS hates doing dishes more than anything else, she was pretty excited. Next up, the mighty Oscars. Anyone else wants to get in on the picking fun, let me know.

My favorite part of the Grammys last night was Kanye West and Jamie Foxx's marching band halftime show. Hilarious! Whoever dreamed up that idea should get a medal. Kanye and Jamie should also get medals for dancing around in those uniforms.

I also really liked the Linkin Park/Jay-Z/ Paul McCartney performance. Never in my life did I think I would see Jay-Z on stage with Paul McCartney doing a Beatles song. It was amazing. But I think the Grammys have reached the point that people only watch to see what singers they've paired up. Madonna and the Gorillas, and a guy from LFO paying tribute to Sly Stone? Hmm. If we hadn't had the bet going, I wouldn't have cared about the winners at all. And Kelly Clarkson won two grammys? I take all of this as furthur proof that the Grammys are no longer "real" awards.

Since I cleaned yesterday, I guess I can't use that as an excuse not to find a job today. At least I have a good episode of CSI to look forward to tonight. It's the return of Lady Heather! Hope everyone has a happy Thursday!

A day of discovery

I managed not to fall down at broomball for the second week in a row. That's a rather large accomplishment for someone as graceless as me. I consider it especially large, because no one was skating on the ice before we got on it, so it was extra slippery. On a side note, we won (again!) Bethmania even scored a goal. And we had a cheering section with LAMINATED signs. Awesome.

After last night's victory, I was feeling brave this morning, and cleaned out under the kitchen sink. I don't believe I've done that in a really long time. I found approximately 2 million paper grocery bags, 3 million plastic grocery bags, a pair of rubber gloves, a roll of paper towels, and a bottle of Sparkling Grape Juice. I have no idea where the grape juice came from, and can only assume it's a remnant of KenBecky. I'm thinking about saving it for her wedding. I'm sure she'll love it.

Bethmania is making enchiladas tonight for our weekly dinner. I'm pretty excited about it. I always enjoy someone cooking for me, and I look forward to having people over. Even though I have to tidy up. Our little dinner party group has flourished, despite one member attempting to welsh out of her week to cook and instituting a dish quota.

Well, I think that's it for now. I'm listening to Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits, and wondering where and when she went so wrong.

Happy Tuesday everyone! It's before noon, and I'm blogging. I consider that progress. I've actually been up for quite a while, busily writing letters and addressing envelopes. I've even read the news this morning.

This is awesome. Good for her. Not that wrestling is a particularly favorite sport of mine, but it's definitely a male dominated sport, and I always like to see girls beat boys at their own game.

My horoscope this morning:
Someone headed for danger won't be cautious -- and you may pay the price. Beware.

That's not boding real well for my broomball game later. I don't want to be gored, sticked, slashed, hooked, poked or injured. Yikes! I think it's going to be an interesting game. I've been studying my play book, and I've almost memorized our signature play, "The Annexation of Puerto Rico"

I have to go to the Post Office and Office Max today. It's going to be an exciting day, I can feel it already. I was in charge of pushing the cart, and RedNic was in charge of running to get all the things on the list that we'd forgotten. The Velveeta cheese threw her for a loop, because it wasn't in the refrigerator. Silly girl. Velveeta isn't real cheese...why should it need to be cold? It's like ketchup. You can keep it in the cupboard until you open it.

We decided on a burgers and chips and all that sort of junk food for our all female Super Commercial party. (Note to self- remember to take meat, ketchup, and brownies) Yummy.

After the jaunt to the grocery store, we watched Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with the Naughty Nurse, who needed a good chick flick/girl night to cheer her up. I managed to make it all the way through the movie without crying, which is a first for me, but Naughty Nurse and Miss School Teacher cried. RedNic fell asleep.

I had the strangest dream last night. Normally, I dream in color and sound, and I can remember most of the dream, but what stood out last night was the smell. I was dreaming about a certain boy on television, and we were on a date (I said it was a dream...) and I could smell him. He smelled fantastic, and it was all I could do not to jump in the restaurant. Anyway, I woke up with a smile on my face, but that's the first time I think I've ever smelled a dream. Live and learn.

I've got brownies to make and a crossword puzzle that isn't going to do itself. Then I've got a
P-A-R-T-Y to go to. Auf Wiedersehen!

I am a lazy bum, and I like it

Is there anything better than a Saturday? A really lazy Saturday?

I went on a terrific date last night. My only complaint is that Rednic doesn't seem to think I am important, and wore sweats. Oh well- she paid, so I'm not complaining too loudly.

We went to see Something New. It was cute, and if I ever get a house, I'm hiring a landscaper who looks like this. Yum yum.

All in all, a good quality evening. Rednic even sprung for a snack before the movie, so we went to the Marketplace at Marshall Fields, and I had the most delicious Asian chicken pasta salad. It had bits of wontons, and mandarin oranges, and general goodness.

So I'm just bumming around today watching basketball, and being lazy. Ahh. Thinking about making brownies for Miss School Teacher's Super Bowl Bash tomorrow. Brownies...ahh. The couch is calling my name, and I do hate to disappoint, so I'd better go.

Sleep, that elusive dream

I think it's official. I've become an insomniac. I've been awake for 23 hours of every day this week. I don't think I would have missed much had I spent some of the time sleeping. I'm just not tired. Ever. At least not tired enough to fall asleep for longer than an hour.

Happy belated Groundhog day. The groundhog is my second favorite burrowing mammal. It would be my favorite, because Groundhog Day is such an awesome movie, but the dancing gopher from Caddyshack is really the winner here. I like to think we all have a little bit of that gopher inside of us. This is what I come up with at three in the morning...

Bethmania and I are addicted to Dancing with the Stars. It's very sad, but it's pretty much the most entertaining thing ever. I like Drew Lachey, because he's got some mad pelvic skills, but Bethmania likes Jerry Rice. I voted ten times last night...on my phone, and then twice on email. I can't help it. My name is JenY, and I'm a ballroom dancing addict.

It's Super Bowl weekend. I have plans! That I made in advance! Is it sad that I'm more excited about the commercials and the entertainment than the game itself? I just have no attachment to either of the teams playing this year. Not that I ever do, but I'm especially ambivalent this year.

Well, I have a job to find. Until 4pm, when I allow myself to turn on the television and watch him. Ahh.

Yes, you can say it, you're all thinking it. I need to get out more. I am well aware of that. Hope everyone out there has a lovely Friday.

I am happy to report that the Rec Sports Rockets were victorious in our first broomball game last night. We tried to run my new favorite play, the Annexation of Puerto Rico, but it proved to be a little complicated for a bunch of broomball novices. Also too complicated- taking my camera out of my purse to take pictures with it. Maybe I'll remember next week.

I am also happy to report that I am the hot lunch date of the week. After DadY yesterday, RedNic called me up to invite me to Eagan for pizza, breadsticks, and the Tyra Banks show. Delicious. So now I'm back at home, full, for the second day in a row. Anyone want to invite me to lunch tomorrow?

I've got a couple of hot job prospects to look at this afternoon, so I'd better get to it, since my morning was about as unproductive as possible.

It's a very meaty Tuesday

I've just returned from lunch with PAWS and DadY. DadY was in town, and so we met him at the Lion's Tap for a delicious burger and fries meal. It's a little bit of a drive, but definitely worth it. Especially since I managed NOT to get lost this time. I'm very proud of myself.

MS is cooking tonight. I'm sure it will be suitably highbrow. I'm looking forward to it. Following dinner, I have my first broomball game of the season. For those of you who don't know what broomball is, it's like hockey with brooms and a ball. I fall down a lot, but I have fun. I'm looking to improve my game from last year's less than stellar showing. The highlight of last year's season was when Marea the Huntress tried to climb over the boards onto the ice, and fell back into the bench. Look for fun highlights tomorrow. I'm taking my camera, so maybe some action shots.

I'm back on the job prowl. Haven't heard anything from the California job yet, but I'm going to continue looking. Keep your fingers crossed.

RIP Coretta Scott King. She was a woman of great courage and strength, and an inspiration to many people, myself included.

Ok- I have to decide what I'm taking to Miss School Teacher's Super Bowl Party. She was surprised when I told her she was hosting it, but she's a good sport.

I am happy to report that my laptop (or my daytime buddy) is now functional again and I can blog. It's been an interesting couple of weeks since my last entry. I've been to California and seen sunshine, and I've been to Wisconsin and seen rain.

Natpot and I ventured to Madison over the weekend to see Golden Gopher hockey. We stayed with some of Natpot's friends, and were lucky enough to have a tea party with Princess Anna. She was also nice enough to share all her toys with us. I might be almost 24 years old, but coloring pictures is still a lot of fun. Especially since I draw like a 4 year old.

The hockey game was super fun, and the Gophers won, so the Badger faithful were in a rather subdued mood Saturday night. I'm sure I would be. But I met a ton of new people, and I finally got to see the Wisconsin capitol. A good quality weekend all around.

It was a good quality weekend because Grey's Anatomy was new last night. Is anyone else getting really sick of Mrs. Dr McDreamy? She needs to go back to New York so Meredith and Dr. McDreamy can get back together. If only the writers read my little blog... I also kind of wanted to punch the new extra perky doctor. If I ever am like that, I would hope someone would punch me. I hereby give my permission, but don't punch me in the face- I wouldn't want to ruin it.

I'm looking forward to my week. I have big plans...or not. I'm in the process of making my Super Bowl plans. I'll probably still be in the process of making the plans on Sunday afternoon.

MS is cooking dinner tomorrow night. I'm not sure what she's making, but she cleaned out Mom and DadY's supply of ground beef over the weekend. I'm a little curious what she could be making that requires a whole cow...but I'm sure it will be delicious. Mmm.

It's good to be back. Look for more tomorrow.

A triumphant return to blogging...well, a return to blogging

Have you missed JenY? It's been a long time since my last blog. I'd like to think I've been really busy, but I just haven't had anything to blog about. Really quite sad.

I have been thinking about packing for the jaunt to California. I'm really excited about this interview, and the opportunity in general. The more reading I do, the more I want the job. So everyone think good thoughts on Thursday afternoon.

I'm also excited about the trip in general. I wouldn't care if the interview was in the middle of Nova Scotia. I'm getting out of Minnesota in January.

I got my hair cut yesterday. My stylist assured me it's a very hip bob, but it looked like a cross between John Denver and a bowling ball yesterday. It looks cute today. I like it. I kind of feel like Tinkerbell. Well, a giant Tinkerbell.

I have changed my older sister's blog handle. She was not pleased with BS, so after much consideration, I have dubbed her Perfect Awesome Wise Sister. (PAWS) I hope that meets with approval. Plus, she likes dogs.

That's pretty much all I have today. Look for more excitement later in the week. (And hopefully good news!)

Well, it's the end of the week, and I'm anxious for next week to start. We haven't had knitting forever (or like two weeks) and I miss my knitty girls.

I'm running an airport taxi service this week. BS is going to Colorado, MS is coming back from Las Vegas, and then bethmania, natpot and bs are all returning from Colorado. Bethmania and natpot are on the same flight, but bs is coming in early, and so that's two trips to the airport, but oh well. I'm returning for California at 4 am, and bs is coming to get me, so I don't mind.

Speaking of California, less than two weeks until I leave! Hooray for getting out of Minnesota in January! It's just been so gray and not pretty out. I was reading the Strib yesterday, and I came across an article on Seasonal Affective Disorder. I think I suffer from this. I'm good through Christmas, but then it's all downhill until the thaw. I used to think Spring was my favorite season because of my birthday, but now I think I'm just excited to see the sun.

Well, I have to do some shopping today, since Rednic has said she's bringing Christmas presents to our movie night. Hmm...I'll see what I can come up with.

That new blog smell

Ah, the first blog of the new year. And only three days after the year officially started. I was too busy watching football and sleeping on previous days.

I got myself out of bed yesterday to watch the Rose Parade. All those poor people in the rain had it easy. The rest of us had to listen to Teri Hatcher. Bethmania and I thought we should start a drinking game. Everytime Teri mentioned her daughter, we'd take a shot- but then we decided it was indecent to get plowed at ten am. I love the Rose Parade. It's one of those traditions that I have no idea why it's important, but I always watch it.

Well, that's pretty much the story of my year so far. I'll leave you with some words of wisdom from Robert Burns.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

UPS- moving at the speed of business

I'm nicely rested today, after sleeping for about 15 hours last night. It felt great. Unfortunately, my Golden Gopher football team was not rested, and lost the bowl game today. Hopefully the hockey team fares better this evening. BS has procured some tickets for us, and I am hoping for a win.

So funny story. Two years ago, MS and I lived about a mile apart. We had the same UPS guy, which we discovered because he asked if I had a sister who lived nearby. It was a little creepy, but we thought maybe he was just being polite. We both moved since then, but she moved back into the neighborhood in August, and the same guy still has the route. She got a package yesterday, and he asked her if she was the same girl. So we laughed a hearty laugh. Ok, it's really not that funny of a story, but I was amused.

Tomorrow's New Year's Eve. I hate New Year's Eve. No, I hate going out on New Year's Eve. It's the night when all the idiots crawl out of the woodwork and feel the need to drink themselves into oblivion. I'm just not that excited about the night. So that's my opinion. Now, I'm being evicted from the computer because it's BS's and she wants to check her email. Happy Friday!

Argh...cold germs

I'm officially sick again. I blame MS. She was hacking all over everything all last week, and I spent four hours in the car with her yesterday. At least she waited until after Christmas to infect me with her germs.

So that's pretty much it from me today. I'm watching Jeopardy and doing some tidying up from the Christmas/Hanukkah/Festivus party last night. It's been a low key day, and I'm pretty excited about that.

It's just my holiday weight

Welcome back, faithful readers. JenY is fresh off the holiday break. It was an exciting one.

BS picked me up on Friday. Miracle of miracles, I was ready to go at like 10 am. We sat in lunchtime traffic for a half hour, then I realized I'd forgotten my overnight bag, so we had to go back and get it. BS and I were having a delightful ride home, singing along with the radio, until we got about a mile from Mankato and ran out of gas. I'll take the blame for this one, because BS's gas gauge doesn't work, and had we not had to double back for my bag, we'd have made it home. So we call up DadY...he was having lunch, but he came and got us. He's the best Dad.

So the rest of Friday was fairly uneventful. On Saturday, the entire Y family went to church. We were sitting up in the balcony, and I spied Miss School Teacher sitting downstairs. Since I thought she was leaving the next day to visit BF Jeff, I went down to return her belt after the service. I hurried down the stairs in my attempt to catch her, and gravity nicely helped me down half the flight. As I picked myself up after falling down, I realized about fifty people had witnessed my less than graceful descent, but since it was church, no one was laughing. Except Miss School Teacher and Nurse Nissa. Oh well. I've got some carpet burn and a nice bruise for my trouble.

Christmas was family filled, and General Christmas (aka MomY) really pulled out all the stops. We ate, ate, ate, opened presents, ate more, and watched football. Perfect.

I've just come back from lunch with KenBecky and LouisPhil. We went to Old Chicago, and I just remembered I've left my leftovers in the car. Hmm. Guess I'll have to make another trip downstairs. Anyway, I'm super glad I got to see them before they leave for Madison. Ok. I think that's all from me for today. I'm going to digest lunch.

JenYule- The Christmas Edition

Since I'm headed home today for FOUR fun filled days of family togetherness, this is going to have to be the Christmas edition.

First off- my thoughts and prayers are with the Dungy family in Florida. I always liked Tony Dungy when he was here, and would have preferred he stayed. It must be heartbreaking for any parent to outlive their child. I can only imagine.

Second- Bethmania could also use a hug. I don't think she slept last night working on her family Christmas present. I don't believe she's moved in about 18 hours. I stand corrected. She slept two hours.

So, in the spirit of the holiday season-

I have always thought of Christmas time as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.
-Charles Dickens

Merry Christmas!

I have nothing to put up here because I am boring and not feeling creative at all today

Congrats to Chele for getting yesterday's movie quiz. You get a big HO HO HO.

Today's herculean tasks include getting my laundry together (and quite possibly sorted) and finding the Il Divo cd. Since I'm more excited about the CD than the laundry, I'm headed out as soon as my hair dries. I know, they make hair dryers, but that's work.

Bethmania made a love soup for us last night. Chicken wild rice, with extra chicken. Then we got to decorate our own Christmas cookies and eat them. I ate all my cookies like the good little girl that I am. Yummy.

Ok- I'm off to find this CD.

A not so cheery morning

I was awakened this morning by a noise. If a train and a cow were capable of mating, I'm pretty sure their offspring would have made this noise. I have yet to discover what the noise was. Maybe a smoke detector or a fire alarm, but no one was rushing out of the building. I'm no fire expert, but I'm pretty sure the building in not on fire, and therefore I do not need to evacuate.

But I'm up and moving around now. Thinking about running the vacuum. I found a peanut M&M in the couch this morning. Does anyone else ever find food on their couch, or I am the only lucky one?

I watched Ken Barlow's last ever newscast in Minneapolis last night. I might need to move to Boston so I can continue watching him. Kare-11 is really disappointing me. First they lost anchor god Paul Magers, then Frank Vascellero, and now Ken Barlow. What kind of idiots do they have running that station? I may give up watching the news for another 20 years, until I'm old enough for WCCO. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. No more tv news.

Well, that's pretty much all from me today. I'll leave you with a name that movie.

George: Now, come on, get your clothes on, and we'll stroll up to my car and get... Oh, I'm sorry. I'll stroll. You fly.
Clarence: I can't fly. I haven't got my wings.
George: You haven't got your wings. Yeah, that's right.

Happy Birthday DadY

Today is an important day in my life. It's DadY's birthday. If DadY wasn't ever born, then I wouldn't be here, and y'all would have much less interesting lives.

Yesterday was Cousin DanY's birthday. He's getting so grown up. I remember when he was born, and now he is old enough to drive. I'm really getting up there. Oh, wait, no. I might be able to drive a car, but I still can't rent one. That's still more than a year away. I think that's the only age related thing I have left to look forward to. Renting a car. By the time I'm old enough for social security, it won't exist anymore, so I've crossed that off my list of things to come. Maybe that's why people have children. So they can look forward to their children being old enough to do things. Yes? No? I don't know.

I think that's it for birthdays. Um...let's see. Bethmania is cooking dinner tomorrow night, which means I have to clean up my horrendous mess today. The apartment looks like a Christmas tornado blew through. I'm a very good present wrapper, I'm just not neat about it. So I have to pick up all the little plastic pieces from the backs of bows, and all the wrapping paper scraps, and all the price tags. I love Christmas. Back to Bethmania, I'm not sure what she's cooking. I guess I'll be surprised. But Marea the Huntress is coming (I think) and I haven't seen since the great moving trip in August, so I'm pretty excited about that.

BS and I are trekking all the way out to Eden Prairie tonight to have a birthday dinner with DadY and MomY. We're going to the Lion's Tap, which I love. The only problem is that I have yet to make it to there without getting lost. Everytime. Bethmania and I once wound up in Norwood Young America. BS seems to know where she's going, so hopefully we make it there on the first try. I'll keep you posted.

I'm having the BEST WEEK EVER!

If I was some sort of famous person, I'm pretty sure I'd be having the BEST WEEK EVER on vh1. Since I have not yet achieved my goal of becoming famous (mostly through sheer laziness and a lack of talent in any useful field), I haven't yet made it on television.

I went home yesterday to surprise DadY for his birthday. He was very surprised, and pretty excited about his fish fillet kit. ( I'm still a little unsure if he remembered picking it out three weeks ago, but I suspect he was just acting surprised.) While I was home, I got to see GrandpaY too. He's always a good time, and has lots of good stories. Yesterday's included some of Great Uncle Ernie, and the new porch being built next door.

MomY had some shopping to do, so off to Target we went. While attempting to survive the toy aisles, we ran into RedNic and her mom- also out shopping. I don't have a story about this. We just ran into them, chatted a bit, then risked our lives for a Angelina Ballerina doll for my cousin.
If I ever have children, I'm not buying them toys at Christmas. They're getting car parts, and things from the aisles that don't have people in them.

Ok- "knitting" tonight at Cossetta's. Mmm. I think I must have been Italian in a previous life. Good food, good wine, and good atmosphere.

I shopped until I dropped yesterday. Literally. I came home and collapsed into a chair. I have finished all of my holiday shopping, so I guess it was all worth it.

Rednic, Miss School Teacher and I didn't quite make the sledding yesterday. By the time we all got to one place, we were hungry, and then it was getting late, so we went to Uptown. We went to Famous Dave's in Calhoun Square- they had a band playing- The White Iron Band. The White Iron Band was pretty good- I enjoyed the music.

We discovered a man sitting at a table several tables over. This man was noticeable because of his red and green plaid sportcoat. It looked like he'd been to the casting call for Caddyshack. So naturally curious girls that we are- we made Miss School Teacher go talk to him to find out what the deal was with the coat. It turns out he only wears it to holiday parties, and Miss School Teacher tried the coat on, and got his phone number. I hope he's not sitting by the phone, I'm pretty sure she's not going to call.

Since Miss School Teacher was brave, I wasn't going to be shown up. I'd been eyeing another guy (and driving Rednic crazy with my analyzing) since we'd arrived. So I was very brave and went over to talk to him. I got the scoop, and we ended up talking for awhile, and he's got my number. So I'll keep you all updated on that.

So it was a good night. I even managed to arrive home wearing Miss School Teacher's fun green belt (in addition to the rest of my clothes, you dirty readers), so I've got a new belt...until I see her again to return it.

On today's agenda- knitting and wrapping, and probably some football. Toodles!

Anyone wants to challenge me as the moodiest person ever...I'll take you out!

It's amazing how quickly my moods can shift. I went from being crabby yesterday morning, to ecstatic yesterday afternoon, to having the worst headache I've ever had last night. I hope I'm not getting the bird flu. After yesterday's emotionally draining day, I'm feeling recharged, and am headed out to the mall today! I know...the mall. What's more exciting than a Friday before Christmas at the mall? I only have two presents left to buy, and am hoping to get them taken care of today, so I don't have to go shopping anymore before Christmas. I'm going to call up MS and see if she wants to brave the mall with me.

I think RedNic, Miss School Teacher and I are going to go sledding today. Plenty of snow, not too cold- it's a perfect day. I haven't been sledding in...well, a year. I went last winter. I really like to sled. In all honesty, I'm very fond of outdoor activities in the wintertime- I just get so cold I can't stay outside very long, and then everyone gets annoyed with me. Oh well- I'll just get out my long johns and buck up.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to shop I go.

Who's crabby today? It's JenY

Ick. What a morning. I have a lot to do, and no desire to do any of it. It's one of those days I just want to crawl back into bed.

But there are only nine more shopping days left before Christmas, and BS has not yet sent out her Christmas list, so I might have to get creative. Or, I'll buy her something I like, and then steal it back for myself. I know, that's not very sisterly of me, and normally I'm a very good present buyer. So she's first on my agenda.

Speaking of BS- we went on a lovely date last night with bethmania and natpot. We watched our beloved Golden Gophers beat UAB in basketball. It's the first basketball game I've been to in awhile, and it was a good one. Neither of the teams played particularly well, but a win is a win.

So if there are only nine shopping days left until Christmas, there are only four shopping days left until the second most important holiday of the year. The most important holiday of the year is, of course, Father's Day- followed closely by DadY's birthday. The penalty for missing the birthday is death, or an excommunication from the family. No, I'm kidding, but DadY gets very sad if we don't see him on his birthday. So now you all know where I get my love of birthday celebrations from. It's all DadY. MomY likes birthdays too, but she's not so hardcore on birthday attendance.

I'm not quite sure I have the strength to tackle both the roads and the malls today. It's messy, I'm crabby, and I don't think I have the patience for it. I'm not sure Job would have the patience for it today. So Christmas and DadY are just going to have to wait another day.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jjstalls.blogspot.com/2005/12/whos-crabby-today-its-jeny.html' title='Who's crabby today? I've got a foot on my balcony that I get to shovel off. I'm going to shovel because I'm the woman of the apartment, I'm home, and I have a shovel. At least it will be some activity.

BS just called- I get to crash her and Bethmania's double date tonight. Actually, I think I'm the date for one of them. I wasn't real clear on the details. But I get to go to a basketball game, so I'm pretty excited about that.

It's been a really slow week. I finished Rednic's brother's hat, so I'm starting on the rest of the knitted items my relatives will be receiving for Christmas. Maybe I'll even sew the zipper on my sweater. I'm in possession (why is that word so hard to spell?) of the traveling sewing machine, and I think I remember how to use it. If I happen to sew my finger to the sweater in the process, then it just makes for a better story.

Well, I had quite the fun weekend. Awesome wedding on Saturday- Becky and Ben looked so happy, and the reception was a lot of fun. I met a lot of new people and got my groove on. I even busted out the Electric Slide.

I also got to see KenBecky and LouisPhil. Now that one Becky is married, it's time to start planning for the next Becky to get married. I'm really excited about this wedding too, but since it's not until October, I've got some waiting to do. Anyway, I was really excited to see my Kentucky peeps, and am glad that they came. I miss my KenBecky...

On a sadder note, happy trails to Senator Eugene McCarthy. Although I was not alive during his heyday, I very much respect what he did for politics- both in Minnesota and at a national level. He was very much a man who stood for what he believed in, and had the courage to openly criticize a president about the Vietnam War. It is people like Senator McCarthy that make me proud to be a Minnesotan.

Well, it's Monday, which means it's knitting time! I'm just about finished with the hat I'm knitting, and then will start on some Christmas presents. Hopefully they'll be done by Christmas.

Happy wedding day, pizza, and a scarf.

I think today might be the first ever day I've updated my blog before Chele. It's almost 9am now, and I've been awake about three hours. If you think that's going to make for a more exciting blog, then boy are you wrong. I'm just killing time before I get to get ready for Bride Becky's wedding. Only two more hours to kill...maybe I should decide what I'm going to wear. That's always a chore. It's cold, but I want to look cute. One of life's greatest dilemmas.

Had dinner with Rednic at the CPK last night. Yum. If I ate nothing but BBQ chicken pizza and hot fudge brownie sundaes for the rest of my life, I'd be a happy woman. I'd be twice the size of what I am now and die of a heart attack at 35, but I'd be happy.

So funny story...Rednic and I were gift shopping for Bride Becky (because we're really on the ball about this) last night, and while we were waiting to have our present gift wrapped, a woman asked me where I'd gotten my scarf. I was wearing my pride and joy, the Burberry scarf my parents gave me for Christmas last year. I told her about the magic of the BigO, and in the ten minutes it took for our present to get wrapped, she reminded her husband four times what the website was. LOL- the poor husband was like, "I can remember a website." They were cute. It really made my evening.

Ok- I'm off to decide what to wear, and then go have fun at the wedding! Hooray!

It's FRIDAY!!! YES!

Finally, it's Friday. I thought it would never come. Well, I knew it would come because Friday always comes after Thursday.

I did some more volunteering today, and met quite a few interesting people. It's an international meet, so I made a new friend from Croatia, and one from San Luis Obispo. I know, California is not a foreign country, but it's 80 degrees there today...and it definitely is not 80 degrees here.

Then I took Mom and Dad out on the town for a little shopping. I bought MS's present. Three down, three to go. Wow. I'm really on the ball. Maybe this year I'll finally have my shopping done before Christmas Eve. I think maybe last year I didn't buy some presents until January, so my goal is to beat that.

Speaking of shopping- Rednic (that's fun...her hame is Nicole and she has red hair...) and I are going to buy a wedding present! Not sure what we're buying, but the thought makes me happy.

Ok- I'm going to make like a banana and split. Happy Friday and probably Saturday too.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jjstalls.blogspot.com/2005/12/its-friday-yes.html' title='It's FRIDAY!!! Bride Becky is getting married, Bex is coming to visit, and I do love a good wedding. I'm uber pumped for Bride Becky- she picked a winner, and she's happy. Becky, I hope your married life is filled with the same joy you're feeling now.

Speaking of weddings, Happy Anniversary to Mom and Dad...27 years of wedded bliss, and three perfect daughters. Congratulations!

So I've been volunteering for the Paralympic Swimming meet, and I am continually in awe of what people are capable of doing. They are determined to succeed, and nothing is going to stop them. And, they're the nicest people ever. Of all the swim meets I've seen in my life (and that's probably more than the rest of you combined), I've never met a better group of people.

Ok- that's a lot of sentiment for one very short blog entry. I have to go blow my nose.

Ok, done with the heavy stuff. I'm pretty bored right now, and am amusing myself with quizzes. I took one to find out which movie star I was. Is anyone surprised by my results? I always did think it would be cool to be the Godfather. Except for the killing part, and the horse heads. Anyway, you all should go check it out and see who you are. Watch out for me and my mafia code.

What Classic Movie Are You?
personality tests by similarminds.com

I'm pretty sure the neighbors are stealing my heat

It's so cold in my apartment. I've actually busted out my long underwear. It's toasty...but unfortunately doesn't cover fingers and toes. I had to take my mittens off to type. It's been a pretty quiet day. Hopefully tomorrow is a little more exciting. I'm volunteering for the Paralympic Meet at the pool, at the request of BS. At least it will be warm at the pool. Ma and Pa are coming up for a visit tomorrow. Family fun all around.

That's really all from me today. Not an exciting day at all- I'll try and do better next time.

Hooray for me!

So I was a big girl today and went to happy hour with cute geeky tech boy. It was super fun, but unfortunately confirmed presence of live-in girlfriend, who apparently doesn't care that he wears the same thing every day. But...he has a brother. I was not able to learn anything other than the existance of said brother. I'm seeing tech boy on Friday, so I'll learn more then. Thanks to Smellen, Chele and Brandacious for all the advice last night. So, as sad as I am about the girlfriend, I'm pretty proud of myself for actually talking to him. Maybe there's hope for me yet. So that's my story about that.

We had our holiday potluck at work today. I made ham and cream cheese wrapped dill pickles. Yummy. There was so much good food. I love the holidays. An excuse to eat all day. Since everyone else is eating, no one else knows how much you're eating. So no one can accuse you of being a pig.

I've got some work to do on resume and cover letter so I can send them out tomorrow in hopes that I will someday have a real job. And maybe figure out why I post, and it says I post two hours earlier.

Liberation of a meme

I'm stealing this from Chele, who I think stole it from someone else. I'm going to lay around all day and watch football, knit and perhaps eat leftover pizza. I'm still a little full from natpot's dinner on Thursday. We had lasagna, and it was delicious. My favorite part of the dinner was the make your own garlic bread. I had to pick my own clove of garlic and spread it on the bread. Yum, yum, yum. We also had a build your own salad bar. Natpot makes a heck of a dinner. It's bethmania's turn to cook this week, and I'm a little wary. A carton of eggs has appeared in our fridge, and eggs are not a meal. At least not to me.

BF Jeff is doing very well. Thanks for all your thoughts. Miss School Teacher said everything went very well, and he's on the road to recovery.

Tomorrow we're going to pick out a tree for my favorite redhead. We're headed up to the tree farm where Kevin Garnett buys his Christmas tree. So really, it's like we're buying a Christmas tree with Kevin Garnett. Irrefutable logic. So my favorite redhead, Miss School Teacher and Bridal Becky and I are off tomorrow afternoon. It's doing things like buying a Christmas tree that remind me I'm an adult. Strange how that hits me sometimes.

Ok, the couch is calling my name. My covert espionage turned up some not so good information. There may or may not be (GASP) another woman. That really throws a wrench into my plans. So I'm comforting myself with carrots and dip, AND I'm double dipping. That's right. I'm a rebel.

It's just been one of those days that nothing seems to go my way. I seem to have a lot of those. Just once, I'd like a day where everything goes my way. Has anyone ever had a day like that? I'd love to hear about it, and dream of the day it happens to me.

I have to stop eating now because Natpot is cooking dinner tonight. Not quite sure what she's cooking, but it's always delicious. There was that one incident with the pumpkin pie, but I'm sure that was all Sara Lee's fault. Also, I have eaten the entire bag of baby carrots.

Well, tomorrow's Friday. That's something. I guess. I don't have to go to work all weekend. I'm not going to do anything this weekend. It's all about the laying around. Sweet. Time for some quality knitting.

Time to find out what time dinner is. I could not concentrate at work today. Because of a boy. I'm working up the courage to talk to him. I'm such a wuss. My goal is to talk to him by this weekend. Wish me luck.

So then I get home, and Miss School Teacher maid is not feeling well. Feel better soon! It's almost Christmas!

I had the most delicious dinner last night. I took out my 2 quart saucepan and put in four cups of Brita filtered water. When it started boiling, I put in 2 servings of Creamette spaghetti. While that was boiling away, I browned one pound of lean ground beef, and seasoned it with salt and pepper to my taste. I then opened a can of Green Giant mushrooms, and added them to the meat. I added a jar of Ragu Meat flavored spaghetti sauce to the meat, and turned the heat down to low, so it could simmer while the pasta finished boiling. When the pasta was sufficiently tender, I drained out the water, and put in on a plate. Then I put the sauce on top of the pasta, and topped it all off with some Kraft parmesan cheese. I added a side of garlic toast, and a glass of Kemps Select Skim milk. I like the select because the cows don't get the weird milk hormone, and they live longer. I'm all about saving the dairy cows. Not so much about saving the beef cows. Mmm, meat. For dessert I had a bowl of Kemps New York Vanilla ice cream. The battery in my camera is dead, or I'd have taken pictures of this. And that's how I make spaghetti. Not at all from scratch.

It's Chele's Birthday!

In honor of Chele's birthday, I have composed a poem.

There once was a lady named Chele
If you saw her, you'd say "Well, well, well!"
Her birthday's today
so we all yell "Hooray!"
Because we think she's real swell.

I know, I missed my calling in life. Tonight's knitting was especially interesting. Chele looked so pretty, and then baby Smells took care of that. I've starting knitting on a hat for a boy...but not an exciting boy. Well, he's exciting, but he's the brother of my favorite redhead...so he's not exciting in that way. Ok, enough 10 year old girl.

I worked a whole 8.5 hours today. That's a lot for me. Shut up, it is a lot for me. Just cause I read all day doesn't mean it's not hard. Ok, so it's not, but still.

I had a lovely time with my maids (and a maid in law...) last night. There's just something about watching Desparate Housewives with your girlfriends to put your life in perspective. My life doesn't have nearly enough drama. Maybe I'll see if I can round up a nun. Or Dr. McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy. Ahhh.

So that's it for tonight. I've started my shopping. I took my dad out the day after Thanksgiving (always an experience) and he picked out everything he wanted for his birthday and Christmas. One down, many more to go.
I had a terrific time at home. Lots (and lots) of eating. Lots of family fun too. My aunt brought a scalloped pineapple, which was yummy, and my mom made my favorite potatoes. I was super excited about all the leftover potatoes, but I managed to leave them in the fridge at my parents. I'm a smidge disappointed about that.
We did some shopping, some more eating, and plenty of general laying around. My favorite redhead and I went out on Friday night, and ran into half of my high school class. I hadn't seen most of them since graduation five and half years ago, so it was fun to catch up. It was interesting to see how people had changed. It was also interesting to see who stayed in touch with each other. Good fun all around. I finally got to meet someone I've been trying to meet for two years, so I was pretty excited about that.
Thanksgiving is over, so it's time to decorate for Christmas. I got my tree out today, and put lights on it. I'm waiting for bethmania to return before I put the ornaments on. I also have some Christmas wall hangings to put up, and lots and lots of Christmas music.

It's just another manic Monday

Monday, Monday Monday. Not a very exciting day so far. I went to work, went to knitting, saw Baby Smellen, and am now home to watch Monday Night Football and Las Vegas. I'm sad, real sad. Sometimes, I just need a day with no excitement. If everyday was exciting, then exciting would become boring, and I do hate boring.

It's almost Thanksgiving. Hooray! No work and eating all day! Of all the holidays, Thanksgiving ranks pretty high, because I like to eat, I like watching football, and it marks the start of the Christmas season. And boy, do I love Christmas. I'm going to Christmasify my apartment this year. We didn't decorate last year, because I was going to Phoenix, and I'm pretty sure bex remembered how I didn't take the tree down until March the year before. But bex is in Kentucky, so haha! I'm going to put up a (fake) tree, and try to take it down before March. Now I just have to find a tree, as I don't really want to buy one. I'd rather have a real tree, but I'd probably start it on fire. So I'll spray the fake one with some pine air freshener. It'll be classy. Because I'm a real classy sort of girl.

It's football time, so I'm out.

Phew. What a weekend. I had a makeshift Thanksgiving dinner at Famous Dave's on Friday with some family that I won't see on Thursday. I haven't seen any of them in quite awhile, so it was super fun. And I really like to eat. Yum. I especially like to eat when I don't have to cook.

I also went to a bridal shower of a friend who's getting married in three weeks. I sometimes don't feel as though I'm old enough to have friends my age getting married, but then I remember I'm not all that young anymore. I mean, I'm not old, but I'm not a teenager anymore. A bunch of my friends are getting married in the next year. I'm excited for all the weddings. I don't envy all the planning that goes into weddings. When I get married, we're all going to the beach, and all my ladies can wear sundresses. Low key. But I'm still walking down the aisle to this. It's classy, very classy.

Ok, it's back to work tomorrow, and then knitting! Hooray! Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Witchcraft and Wizardry

Well, I'm a little sleepy today, due to a very late night after the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The dork quotient was really upped at the theater. Lots (and lots) of costumes. It was almost as bad as the midnight showing of Star Wars, but not nearly as bad as any of the Lord of the Rings premiere. People need to find more to do with their lives (says the girl who sees three hour fantasy/supernatural movies at midnight). Anyway, the movie. It was dark, but not scary. All in all, I enjoyed every minute of it. I highly recommend it.

So after the show, bethmania and I wandered down to our chariot, and then spent another 45 in the most poorly designed parking structure ever. Whoever built the ramp under Block E clearly never had to enter or exit it. It's probably the same person who decided not to put ANY stairs in the whole complex. Nothing like two elevators for five hundred people who need to go down two floors. I tell ya.

I'm hosting some visitors for the weekend, which I'm pretty excited about. Actually, I'm more excited that they're not coming for another hour AND my apartment is clean. No last minute rushing around here. The place still smells like wet wool from my blocking fun yesterday, so I'm burning candles left and right, hoping to get rid of the smell. So far, the smell is proving to be a wily opponent, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve.

All right team- I'm off. Hope everyone has a lovely Friday, and cheer hard for the Gophers tomorrow!

I am queen of a very clean castle

It's Harry Potter Day! Hooray for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! I'm so excited to see the movie tonight. I will, however, refrain from wearing any sort of Harry Potter costume to the midnight showing. I've never understood people who do that. Is the movie more enjoyable in costume because you look like you could be in the movie? Do people stop and say, "Hey, nice dress robes. Was that you in the background of the Christmas dinner?" I didn't think so. I'm really excited to see Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort. Evil has never looked so good.

I had a very yummy dinner last night. Mmm. I know you all like to see pictures, so here you go.

Meat and potatoes. Two of my favorite foods. BS is still complaining about her blog handle, so I am taking submissions from the peanut gallery. Any suggestions?

I blocked my sweater this morning after resewing one of the sleeves. Soon, I will be ready to put the zipper on, and then relegate the sweater to the shelf in my closet where all sweaters go to die. I hope this sweater turns out better than my last attempt. So far, so good.

It's Thursday , and time for CSI. Will Nick's mustache still be there, scaring all of womankind? A burning question.

Snow, glorious snow

The snow is here! Brrrr...

On my way home from knitting last night, I was channel surfing on my radio. One of the radio stations is playing Christmas music already. Isn't it a little early for that? I'm all for the month of Christmas music we get after Thanksgiving, but I think two solid months might be overkill. I'm going to get holidayed out.

I just read this. Frank Vascellaro is leaving KARE-11. I'm so sad. Frank was my trusted source for news. At least, since Paul Magers left. What is going on at Channel 11? They better not lose Ken Barlow too! I'm not old enough to watch WCCO, and all the other "news" programs are less than stellar.

So I'm trying my hand in the kitchen today and am going to make a shepherd's pie. Meat, good. Vegetables, good. Cheese, good. We'll see how it turns out, but it seems simple enough. I'm not completely inept in the kitchen, but I'm usually good for a laugh.

So I have found my new profession. I was watching Boston Legal last night, and James Spader needed to have someone sleep in his bed to help combat the "night terrors". Sold! Though I think thousands of other women may also like the job. I love James Spader. He's so sleezy, but it's a hot sort of sleezy. Boston Legal is just a great show in general. It's super witty, and after watching last night's show, I'm never having any sort of plastic surgery done. Gross.

So I'm off to the store. Enjoy the snow everyone, and don't drive like idiots.

Foiled again by technology...

My computer is determined that I not blog today. It's frozen both times I've tried. So third times a charm. I am determined to outsmart something that is approximately the size of a Dr. Suess book.

I made up my Christmas list today. I know, I know, it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but all the stores have Christmas stuff out, and I'm almost in a holiday mood. Now if we only had some snow so I could bust out all my cute winter wear. Ahh. I think I'm becoming too domestic. Next thing you know, I'll be baking cookies wearing a reindeer sweater and singing in my kitchen. If that happens, hit me. Preferably with the cookie sheet. Then light the reindeer sweater on fire.

Speaking of sweaters, I've reaching the sewing point on my lovely cardigan. I'm a terrible seamstress. Perhaps the worst one ever to attempt sewing. It took me an hour last night to sew one sleeve seam. Watching tv probably didn't help things any. Oh well. Here's a picture for you. I've also included, in the picture, a refreshing caffeinated beverage. Mmm. I couldn't resist just one Mountain Dew.

All right- I'm working on MS's graduation present (look at me, ahead of the game) and having a lot of fun doing it.

Movie quiz of the day- ( A hint, it's from the same people who brought you Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind)

Hamilton Swan: Honey, I'm thinking of switching to the mock turtleneck?

Meg Swan: Is that not breathing?

Hamilton Swan: Well, it's breathing now, but it'll be hot down there. I could go with the lambswool, but then again, you'll see a lot of khaki down there and this merlot looks good with the gray.

A case of the Mondays

I definitely have a case of the Mondays. It's one of those days when there are more reasons to stay in bed than to get out of it. Not even any knitting to look forward to today. I'm almost finished with sleeve number two of the sweater. Then I get to have my first attempt at blocking. Don't worry, I won't do anything without adult supervision. The goal is to have the sweater finished by Thanksgiving so all my relatives can ask about it and I can brag that I have a useful skill.

I'm going to clean my bedroom today. Cleaning is good for the soul. At least that's what I tell myself. Sometimes it's just good for working off a temper, which my goal for the day. I tend to throw away a lot more junk when my brain isn't paying attention to the cleaning. Since I'm just a little bit of a packrat, that's a good thing.

I watched THIS IS SPINAL TAP last night. I love that movie. I'm thinking of souping up all my speakers so they go to 11. Filmmaking genius. I'll never understand how that movie never won an Oscar. Rockumentary. Great stuff.

Ok, I think that's it from me today. It doesn't appear to be so windy, so maybe I'll venture outside this afternoon.

Song of the Day- I love Rock and Roll- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
It was the Number One song on the day I came into the world, so I think it's very fitting that I do indeed love Rock and Roll. Plus, there's no better song to sing along with in your car.

Sunday, lovely Sunday

Ahh, it's Sunday. What a terrific day. Other than fearing that my building might blow over.

I hope everyone has had a terrific weekend. I know I have. My Gophers ran all over those hapless Michigan State Spartans yesterday. I have good feelings about next week against Iowa. It should be a terrific game. I hope those silly Iowa fans don't try something stupid. Who remembers when they tried to take the Metrodome goalposts out the revolving doors? Anyway, I hope that Floyd of Rosedale spends the next year next to the little brown jug.

While we're on the football subject, I'm watching the Vikings and the Giants, and it's a surprisingly good game. I'm a little confused though. Part of the football field appears to be better lit than other parts. It's like the Giants don't have a roof on their stadium. I think we all know that's stupid. Why would you ever want to play outside when you could have a teflon dome? And who thought the Vikings could play under natural sunlight? Not me.

I've had a request that I post pictures of what I've been eating. I'm cooking dinner on Wednesday, so you'll have to wait until Thursday for those.

Ok- back to football. I'll see you all tomorrow.

My hot boy of the day- Jake Gyllenhot...I mean Gyllenhaal. Ahh. He can be my jarhead anytime, but I have to fight bethmania to get him. I'm pretty sure I can take her. I mean, she cheers for the Packers.

It's Friday! Hooray and stuff!

Hooray! It's Friday and I'm very excited!

Thanks to my favorite redhead, my maids and I are headed out for a night on the town. I'm going to test out all my dancing moves for all the upcoming weddings I get to go to. I'm still working on my special signature dance move.

A shout out to Chele, mistress of all things including but not limited to her own domain, who correctly guessed yesterday's movie quote. It's from the Naked Gun, one of the all time great movies ever made.

So last night, bethmania and I were watching CSI because we're sort of addicted. We're enjoying the episode, until we discover Nick has grown himself a rather disturbing mustache. He looks creepy, much older, and not at all hot. So I think the mustache needs to go. That's what I think of that.

Big weekend. Well, big enough. My beloved Golden Gopher footballers are taking on Michigan State tomorrow in the last home game of the season. The Gophs are already bowl eligible, but I think they're going to end up in Nashville, Houston or Shreveport. All those in favor of going say aye. No takers? Me either. So I think tomorrow is the last time I will bust out the gopherocious shirt and cheer in the Metrodome until April, when baseball starts again. At least I'll have hockey to watch.

Ok kids- everyone have a terrific Friday. Watch out for pirates.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jjstalls.blogspot.com/2005/11/its-friday-hooray-and-stuff.html' title='It's Friday! Because of my excellent football picks (10 of 12) correct, I have decided to become a professional football picker. Now if only I could find someone to pay me for it, and it wasn't illegal to bet on sports. We also need to see how this weekend goes. I may have just had a freaky good week.

In the likely event that my picking career does not immediately take off, perhaps I will become a professional karaoke singer. I sang excellent renditions of Like a Prayer and Proud Mary last night. Madonna and Tina better watch out. I'm on the rise. It's a good thing I dropped the second "n" from my name. It was getting between my fans and me.

I'm super excited for the holiday movie season. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Pride and Prejudice, Walk the Line, and about thirty other movies I want to see. What's the over under on me actually seeing any of them? Well, the last movie I went to was in June, so that should tell you something. We may need to take a knitting movie trip to see Pride and Prejudice, and then maybe see another one, as long as we're already at the theater.

I hope this Mr. Darcy is as good as Colin Firth. Well, no one will ever be Mr. Darcy like Colin Firth, so we'll see if this upstart Darcy is any good. I'm also excited to see Mr. Bingley and crazy Mrs. Bennet. BS, I know you're as excited as I am.

Well, kids, this was a long post. I'll leave you with a great quote from an equally great movie. Bonus point and a new blog handle for the first person to get it right.

Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. Jane Spencer: Goodyear?
Frank: No, the worst

Tornado Season in Minneapolis

I woke up this morning to high winds, and as I sit here looking out the window, I keep expecting a dog or a small child to blow past. But the sun is peeking out, so perhaps this won't be such a gloomy day.

Last week, I decided to cut out (or cut down) on my caffeine intake. I haven't had any of my beloved Mountain Dew since last Thursday when I drank the last can in the cube. This decision may have been made out of sheer laziness, since the cubes are really heavy to lug up lots of flights of stairs to my apartment. Anyway, I don't think I'm any more irritable than usual. Bethmania would know. Ask her.

So I've finished sleeve number one (of two, since I just have the two arms) of my sweater. If you want to see what it's supposed to look like, here's a link. Mine is not this color, nor does it look this good, but I have hopes for it.
http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/PATTsamus.html

I had a delicious lasagna last night, prepared by my loveable bs. She's decided she doesn't want to be bs anymore, but she hasn't come up with a better acronym, so I'm sticking with bs. The dinner was uber yummy, and bs, bethmania and natpot are always delightful company.

So I'm search of gainful employment yet again today. Then it's off to Bar Abilene with mini-sis (ms), and some other peeps.

Hot boy of the day- Joseph Fiennes, from Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love
Ahh...

Election Day

Well kids, today is Election Day. Did you all remember to vote? I don't want to hear any complaining if you haven't voted.

It's also the first day of my experiment with blogging. I have shamelessly stolen the idea from Chele, one of the great bloggers of the world.

My favorite news story of the weekend-

A cruise ship got attacked by pirates off the coast of Africa. When I heard the story, I had visions of Pirates of the Caribbean, and thought, how exciting to be on a ship attacked by Johnny Depp. Oh wait, no. I don't think Johnny Depp was on this particular pirate ship, and I'm sure that everyone on that cruise was shocked that pirates still existed. So that's my story about that.

My song of the day-
Country Roads by John Denver
It just feels like that sort of day.

Ok- I'm off to vote, then to mail a present to my favorite Kentuckian. Then big sis (bs) is cooking dinner. I'm excited.
